without guarantees

The edge of night
reveals itself,

but sleep,
it can’t be found,

for your words race round
in my head,
fresh from your lips,

along with thoughts of
"what were you trying to say,
or tell me, or ask me".

Were you saying,
"why go on",

or

that
"we"
are bad

for you,
and yours.

In a future not seen,
or lived by any one,

that has yet to arrive,
can all the answers be found,

or do we hold the answers
in our hands,
even as we speak?

Why watch a movie,
that you already know
the ending of,

or that has
no ending at all,

that might leave us
with empty pockets
and empty hearts?

What is the certainty
of this uncertain future,
that stands before us?

If no one trudged forth,
without guarantees,

would anyone
ever get to where
they belong?

I try for sleep once more,
to chase my dreams,
this dreamer that I be.
