Believer

I was talking to a friend the other day about angels
and she said that she did not believe in angels.

She said "Guardian angels, and archangel, and angels
of this kind and that. I just find that too hard to believe,
and name one person who has ever seen an angel"

I said, "Come on, you have to be kidding me.
There are angels all around us,
and I see them every day."

Wingless angels,
earning their wings,
helping the helpless,
healing the sick,

doing what they do,
to make our world
a better place,

one good deed at a time,
and all their small sacrifices
adding up once and again,

giving their all,
until there is no more
left to give,

and those biggest of self sacrifices
that gain them instant immortality
and instant wings to go.

To go to places we can only dream of,
until our day does come that we too
fly away to join their ranks.

I told her for example,
"The people who were going up the stairs,
when everyone else was coming down,
now they were angels earning their wings,
and fly away they did, heaven bound,
their work here on earth being through".

And you know what?
When I looked into her eyes,
I saw into her heart,
and where I once saw a skeptic,
I now saw a believer.
