become me

In my time of need
you were there
for me alone.

You gave me drink,
cup pressed to lips,
as I did thirst.

You wiped my brow,
with cool damp cloth,
to chase away my pain.

You took your time,
and made it mine,
to nurse me to health.

You filled the emptiness,
inside of me,
with tenderness and love.

In your understanding heart,
you showed the understanding,
that I was merely mortal man.

Times be had by me,
this mortal man,
just as all the rest.

Times of

strength,
weakness,

confidence,
doubt,

happiness,
sorrow,

understanding,
confusion,

courage,
fear,

tenacity,
resignation.

All directions
the compass does point,

in these directions,
I have traveled.

Me, this man,
this simple man,

mortal,

of this earth,
of this world,
of my father,
of the father.

I become this who I am,
as I become this me,
step by step.

Steps taken
and those to come,
step by step.

As child learns walk,
he must learn fall,

and to rise above it all,
too often, but not so simply.

So take the time,
if you care to see,
and maybe understand,

just who I might be,
and who I will become
before your very eyes.
