The house of cards
where my love lived
caught fire
over a year past,
and I had been
battling the flames,
as though my life
did depend,
for it did.
All this time,
this battle for
my everything,
I battled,
but the smoke,
it filled my lungs,
and the fire consumed
my very being,
my hopes realized,
my dreams revealed,
my one true chance for
joy.
And even against
my most valiant efforts
without end,
this knight in shining armor
could not slay this dragon
or extinguish this breath of fire.
Haunted by regret,
I held my dreams in hand
close to my heart as possible,
powerless to hold on,
to gifts given
then taken away.
Yes, I have regret.
I have the regret that I once held
that rare illusive treasure
I searched my whole life for
right to heart,
and yet
I was not wise enough,
or strong enough
or lucky enough
to make it mine
for all times to come.
